Before Your Next Hair Colour: The Questions Your Stylist Will Ask (and Why It Pays to Answer Honestly)
A stylist who asks a lot of questions isn't slowing things down, they're setting you up to actually love what you walk out with. So come to your next colour appointment ready to talk, not just point at a photo and hope for the best.
The best colour transformations don't start with a colour bowl. They start with a Q&A.
"For me, a good colour consultation isn't just about choosing a shade," says Cath Fox of Cath & Co Hair Studio. "I want to understand the person wearing the hair, their lifestyle, maintenance expectations, hair history and how they actually want to feel when they leave the salon."

We pulled back the curtain on what four HUSL Beauty stylists actually ask before they touch a single strand. Come prepared, and your next colour appointment and your stylist will thank you for it.
Your Hair Has a History. Own It.
Every colour job you've ever had left a trace, whether you remember it or not. Your stylist needs the full timeline before they commit to anything new.
"Please tell me about your hair history, including colour and other chemical or smoothing services over the past months or years," says Liz Kaszynski of Archer & Solace Hair Sanctuary. While for Matt Bolland, he asks it a different way, “what colours have you worn in the past five years?”

Skip this step and you're rolling the dice. Nail it, and your stylist knows exactly what they're working with.
What's Sitting on Your Bathroom Shelf
Your salon appointment is only half the equation. The other half happens in your shower, every single day.
Stylists want to know what you're using now and how often you're washing. Whether you’ve recently switched products or even what kinds of shampoo and conditioner you use on the daily.

None of it's random. What's been on your hair shapes what your stylist can safely put on it next.
Rainwater, Mains Water, or Somewhere In Between?
This is the one that catches people off guard. Stylists will ask about your water at home, rainwater or mains, and how you'd rate the quality.
Sounds like an odd question until you learn hard water and mineral content can throw a spanner in how colour develops and how long it lasts.
Life Happens to Your Hair Too
Some questions have nothing to do with product and everything to do with life. It’s good to let your stylists know if you've got a holiday on the horizon, or if you're regularly in the pool. Sun, chlorine and salt water all leave their mark.
Stylists will also check in on anything affecting your hair or scalp, medications included, and whether you've experienced hair loss, postpartum or otherwise; this is something Jessica Alchin of Harmonics Hairdressing covers in chair consultations.

Show, Don't Just Tell
Here's where most colour disasters are born: mismatched expectations.
Let your stylists know if you’re digging for a brighter, softer, warmer, cooler, more dimensional, or more natural look.
Cath keeps it simple and just as sharp: what do you love about your hair right now, and what would you change in a heartbeat?
Bring the photos. Seriously. A picture does more work than any amount of describing "kind of golden but not too golden."
The Tuesday Test
Not how you wear your hair when it's freshly done. How you wear it on a completely ordinary Tuesday.
Both Cath and Liz ask this, and it's the question that separates a colour you love in the mirror from a colour you actually live with. Stunning on day one means nothing if it fights your everyday routine.
The Maintenance Gut Check
This is the honesty round, and it's worth taking seriously.
"How much maintenance are you realistically able to commit to, both in the salon and at home?" Liz asks.
Matt puts it another way, asking “how often you want to colour and whether you're chasing low or high maintenance?”
There's no wrong answer, only a dishonest one. Say what's true and your stylist will build a plan that actually fits your life.
How Much Time Have You Actually Got?
The practical one, and it matters more than people think. Good stylists will always check how much time you've set aside, so they know what's genuinely achievable in that window.
Big transformations sometimes need more than one visit. Better to hear that upfront than feel rushed through it.
The Bottom Line
A stylist who asks a lot of questions isn't slowing things down, they're setting you up to actually love what you walk out with. So come to your next colour appointment ready to talk, not just point at a photo and hope for the best.
